Welcome letter for First Year Day Students

Hello, incoming King’s day student!

Welcome to King’s! We know you must very excited about the upcoming year, but that you probably have some questions too. Questions like:

Who the heck we are “we”? We are the Day Students’ Society, hitherto known as the DSS. The DSS is a society whose purpose is to to advocate for day student interests and to help first year day students with life at King’s.

But wait! What’s a day student, you ask? A day student is any King’s student that doesn’t live in residence. Most people who study at King’s are day students; however, only a fraction of them are day students during their time in first year.

As a day student, your situation will be somewhat different from that of typical first year students at King’s. Being a day student at King’s has its own special set of challenges and rewards. We at the DSS will be there to help you out as you navigate your way through these new exciting times. We provide day students in general (and first years in particular!) with various services which we thought you might be interested in knowing about.

First of all, we love to begin the year with our traditional DSS BBQ! This chill event takes place on September 2nd, the day before Move-In Day, and is a great way for you to meet your fellow first year day students while enjoying some classic summer food. In fact, some of our current executive members became friends at the DSS BBQs in their first year. We will be sending you an invitation with the details in the upcoming weeks, so stay tuned!

In the days that will follow the BBQ, you will also get a chance to hop into our legendary Orientation Week (O-Week) van. As a day student, it can be tough to fully take part in the events of O-Week while trying to commute back and forth between home and King’s. To make sure you don’t miss out on any of the fun, the O-Week van can take you to and from King’s no matter where you live, and even if it’s late at night (and it’s freee!). The phone number for the O-Week van will be provided at the beginning of O-Week.

Of course, you may not necessarily want to have to go through all that back and forth–even with the help of the O-Week van. So for those dedicated students who seek to stay on campus as long as they possibly can, we are pleased to introduce the Day Students’ Hostel! The hostel is a brand new service, which we are SOO excited for! Throughout the year, at a rate of $35, you may book a room in North Pole Bay to stay the night. However, during O-Week, the President’s Office has been generous enough to subsidize the Day Student Hostel, making it free for the entirety of O-Week!! We will provide you with more information on how to book a room closer to September.

And when you need a little time to rest during the hectic O-Week, or when you are simply waiting between two events, there will also be the Wilson Common room: a relaxing, comfortable room furnished with snacks and board games, for all those day students who wish to kill time in a restful manner. And of course, we members of the DSS exec will be consistently on campus, always ready to help you out, give advice, or simply chat with you if you are looking for someone to talk to.

Throughout the year, the DSS will bring to you many more services and opportunities to take part in campus life. You can look forward to Maritime Night, our popular fall event where we celebrate our beloved Maritime culture. In years past, we have also brought students on trips to watch Moosehead hockey games, and even organized road trips to Sugar Moon Farms, which we hope to repeat this year. We consistently try to give day students a chance to gather together to have a good time, whether it is for a supper at the President’s Lodge, or simply to have tea in the Wardy at our weekly Life-Chat and Tea events. And if you feel particularly interested in our events, you can even consider joining our executive: we will be looking for someone to take up the role of First Year Representative in the fall…

All in all, we are very excited for the coming year, from the initial O-Week celebrations going to the very end of April. In the meantime, you can already start getting to know us on the internet: we have Facebook (facebook.com/DSSKings), Twitter (@TweetDSS), Instagram (@daystudentssociety), and our very own website: kingsdaystudentssociety.com! Our website has more info about our services, resources, events, and more, and our social media are updated often.

We also encourage you to join the “University of King’s College Class of 2021” and “UKC First Year Day Students 2017/2018” Facebook groups to connect with your new classmates, neighbours, and friends!

And if you’d like us to know you better, you can always contact us or, better yet, fill out the survey on our website. Our services should be tailored for YOU and telling us a bit about you will help us accomplish that. Please feel free to send us an email or message with your questions and concerns–we don’t bite!

We can’t wait to meet you, and hope that you have a great year at King’s!
